Irish Cluster of the ROKWOOD project hosted a Biomass / SRC for Renewable Heat workshop in Athlone, Co. Westmeath on 15th May.

Presentations were given the Irish Cluster co-ordinator Patrick Daly of DIT and by Roisin Grimes (IrBEA), Barry Caslin (Teagasc), Michael Doran (Action Renewables & IrBEA), Paddy Phelan (Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency) and John Keely.

The workshop was well attended with over 40 participants from the public sector and private enterprise, as well as actors from all stages in the supply chain. Issues discussed included developing local biomass supply chains and logistic centres, an all island review of the biomass sector and policy implications, developing successful ESCO contracts, post-harvest management of biomass, the challenges and the future of SRC in Ireland and examples of case studies in other regions of the ROKWOOD project. After the workshop, the IrBEA Energy Crops sub-group held their second meeting, and Barry Caslin of Teagasc held a meeting of willow growers in Westmeath.
