UWM is a leading high education institution in the eastern-north part of Poland. The total number of students from 18 faculties is almost 30,000 with 3,500 academic staff. The mission of the UWM is to combine high productivity of agricultural land with maintaining of high environmental value of the region. One of leading specialisation in research as well as teaching is bioenergy with special attention to growing and utilization of lignocellulose biomass of short rotation willow plantations. New cultivars of willow dedicated for energy production registered by faculty academic staff and publishing by them manuals and handbooks for biomass growers are very important inputs of UWM for development of bioenergy sector in Poland.
University of Warmia and Mazury owns laboratories equipped with modern analytical equipment where all analyses of biomass can be performed. There is a modernized teaching structure, new congress center, experimental and demonstration fields in close vicinity of University campus what can serve as a base for workshops and training for high number of participants. At the Faculty of Agriculture and Environemntal Protection collection of numerous willows genotypes (registered cultivars, clones and different hybrids) is run also different systems of willow production for energy growing are presented.
